Voice of the Children collection of Terri Bush, 1968-1975
Overview
Correspondence, reports, poems, and other materials documenting the administration of the Voice of the Children program and the publication of The Voice of the Children, a 1970 volume of poems written by program participants. Also included are typed copies of poems and prose writings by June Jordan as well as a 1971 notebook from Jordan's time at the American Academy in Rome.

1.46 linear feet (3+1/2 file boxes)The Voice of the Children collection of Terri Bush includes correspondence and reports relating to the administration of the program and fund raising efforts on behalf of the program and the affiliated 1968 summer camp; handwritten and typed copies of poems and other writings by program participants; and correspondence, poems, royalty statements, and reviews related to The Voice of the Children, a volume of poems written by program participants that was published by Hold, Rinehart and Winston in 1970. Files on program participants include writings, correspondence between the participant and Bush, grades and test scores, and correspondence with private schools regarding admission and financial aid opportunities. Also included are typed copies of poems and prose writings by June Jordan as well as a 1971 notebook from Jordan's time at the American Academy in Rome. Folders are arranged with Voice of the Children first, followed by material relating to June Jordan.
BIOGRAPHY
Educator Terrill "Terri" Bush received a BS from Alabama College and her MA from Teachers College, Columbia University. She taught language arts for three years at Sands Junior High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York, then taught at the Community College of the City of New York in Brooklyn, and worked as a consultant to the Department of Cultural Affairs on the design of a community resources center in East New York. With June Jordan, she co-directed Voice of the Children, Inc., a writing workshop for adolescents in New York, from 1968 to 1970, and served as director of the program until its ending in 1971. In conjunction with her work on the project, she was the director of the 1968 Voice of the Children Camp and mentored Voice of the Children participants, often working to secure them placements in private schools.
