BIOGRAPHY
Professor and theologian Bernadette J. Brooten grew up in Idaho and received a BA in German from the University of Portland in 1971 and a PhD from Harvard University in 1982. From 1982 to 1984, she worked in Germany at the University of Tübingen with Hans Küng on a project entitled Frau und Christentum. Her research was later published as Love Between Women: Early Christian Responses to Female Homoeroticism (1996). She taught at the Claremont Graduate School, the University of Tübingen, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Oslo. From 1997 to 2008, she served on the Advisory Committee for the Women's Studies in Religion Program at Harvard Divinity School. She has taught Christian studies at Brandeis University since 1993, where she also directs the Feminist Sexual Ethics Project. She has written widely on the New Testament, Post-Biblical Judaism, and women and religion, and is the author of Women Leaders in The Ancient Synagogue: Inscriptional Evidence and Background Issues (Scholars Press, 1982) and Beyond Slavery: Overcoming Its Religious and Sexual Legacies (Palgrave-MacMillan, 2010).
