.21 linear feet (1/2 file box)The photograph album of Elva Lorraine Hiler contains candid photographs documenting Hiler's experiences at the Madigan Army Medical Center and serving in Korea during the Korean War. Photographs of Madigan Army Medical Center include images taken before and after Hiler's Korean service tour of the medical personnel and patients as well as social gatherings, including a wedding, parties, and picnics. Photographs taken during Hiler's Korean service tour include images of Army facilities at Taegu, ASCOM, and Yong Dong Po; Army personnel in posed groups, working on patients, and engaged in social activities; North Korean prisoners of war, including images of doctors treating their war wounds; a visit to a Korean temple; and multiples images of a disabled tank. Also included are photographs of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Camp Hakata, Japan, where Hiler stopped on her way to Korea. A small number of clippings, daily bulletins from Fort Ord, California, and examples of United States military and Korean currency are also included. Most of the photographs in this collection are or will be digitized and available online.
BIOGRAPHY
Elva Lorraine Hiler, daughter of Marion Benjamin Gibson and Ida Matilda Williams Gibson, was born September 14, 1898, in Lexington, Oklahoma. She married Frederick William Hiler (1898-1944) in 1921; they had one daughter, Lorraine Hiler Lanphere (1924-2012), before divorcing in the early 1930s. Hiler became a registered nurse in the 1930s and eventually enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps. She was based at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington state and served as a lieutenant during the Korean War with the 171st Evacuation Hospital at Taegu, ASCOM, and Yong Dong Po. She retired from the Army with the rank of major in 1965. She died December 28, 1988, in Maple King, Washington.
