1 folderThe drawing collection of the Schlesinger Library consists of an undated ink drawing entitled Masculine and Feminine Courage Compared, from the "Statistics of Surgery. An Argument for the Female Suffragist," and a holiday card, ca.1967. The ink drawing depicts a woman calmly getting her leg amputated by a saw and a man struggling while getting a vaccination shot. The front of the holiday card includes an etching designed by Lorraine Schneider, depicting a sunflower and the text "War Is Not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things." The etching, titled "Primer," was designed by Schneider in 1965, as part of an exhibit at the Pratt Institute School of Art. Schneider donated all rights to "Primer" to Another Mother for Peace, an organization founded in 1967 and dedicated to the belief that war is obsolete. Another Mother for Peace used the image for a variety of merchandise, including mailings such as this holiday card. The card includes the text "In this gentle season/When men remember they are brothers/And know that all children are our children/We urge an end to killing--Now/Let it be written/Our nation found a way to peace."
