The collection contains eight letters from Adrienne Rich to Barbara von Bechtolsheim concerning rights issues related to including "Women and Honor" and "Split at the Root" in Um die Freiheit schreiben: Beiträge zur Frauenbewegung and apologizing for not being able to write a foreword for the book due to illness and needing to care for her mother. Other letters contain Rich's reasons for not wanting to participate in a biographical project and her reflections on German culture and feminism.

BIOGRAPHY

Barbara von Bechtolsheim studied German literature, philosophy, and psychology at the University of Munich and Stanford University. Since receiving her PhD from Stanford, she has worked as a free lance literary translator and has taught classes on American and German literature at several universities. She translated and wrote an afterward for the German collection of Adrienne Rich's essays, Um die Freiheit schreiben: Beiträge zur Frauenbewegung (Suhrkamp, 1990) and is the author of Paare: Von Beziehungskünstlern und ihrer Liebe (Insel, 2022).
