1 folderCollection contains four letters (one is a fragment) from Harriet Hosmer to abolitionist Lydia Maria Child and one transcription of a letter from Hosmer by Child, ca.1855-ca.1865. Letters describe Hosmer's work, particularly her design for the Lincoln Memorial in Springfield, Illinois, and her statue of Zenobia which critics attributed to John Gibson despite his denials. Hosmer asks for Child's support in refuting the charges.
BIOGRAPHY
Sculptor and inventor, Harriet Goodhue Hosmer (1830-1908) was a native of Watertown, Massachusetts, studied anatomy, and spent much of her life in Rome, where she was at first the pupil of the English sculptor, John Gibson. Her works were exhibited and purchased in England and the United States.
