The correspondence of Ruth Sattler Schwartz includes letters to Schwartz from family and friends and letters Schwartz wrote to her family. Letters from family and friends document social life in the Bronx, New York, and contain mentions of vacations in the Catskills and at the beach. Also included are letters from Schwartz's boyfriend Jacob "Jack" M. Yablonowitz expressing his love for her; recounting his experiences studying zoology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and medicine at the Royal College of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh; and documenting the end of his relationship with Schwartz due to his infidelity. Letters from Ruth to her family document a vacation she took to Miami Beach, Florida, describing Miami Beach and commenting on the lack of social activities except for gambling.

BIOGRAPHY

Ruth Sattler Schwartz, daughter of Benjamin and Kate Sattler, was born March 31, 1916, in the Bronx, New York. She received a BA in biology from Hunter College. Following graduation, she worked as a biologist for the New York City Health Department. In the late 1950s, she earned a teaching degree and worked as a substitute teacher. In 1944, she married Hyman Schwartz, a chemist. They had two children, Ben (born 1946) and Eileen (born 1949). Schwartz died March 25, 1997, of Lewy Body Dementia.
