The scrapbook contains photographs of family and friends; programs and handbills for events at local theaters, including the Apollo Theatre; ticket stubs from dances and other events Butler attended; invitations to parties; napkins, calling cards, and other mementos from parties and events she attended. Also included is a certificate recognizing Butler as a member of the 1915 Indiana Avenue School girls' dodgeball championship team. Most of the photographs in this collection are or will be digitized and available online.
BIOGRAPHY
African-American poet and teacher Anna Mabel Land Butler (October 7, 1901 - March 19, 1989), daughter of John Weaver Land, a hotel doorman and poet, and Edith Land, was raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She attended Indiana Avenue School, Atlantic City High School, and the State Normal School in Trenton. She married Floyd Butler (1904-1993); they had one son, Maurice Hayes Butler. From 1922 to 1965, Butler was employed as an elementary school teacher. From 1936 to 1965, she also worked as a newspaper correspondent for the Pittsburgh Courier. The newspaper also published several of her poems. In 1965, she worked as an editor and reporter for the Philadelphia Tribune. Butler published several volumes of poetry including Album of Love Letters--Unsent, Volume 1: Morning 'til Noon (1952), Touchstone (1961), and High Noon (1971).
