The collection contains Mildred Danforth's writings, copies of her hand-drawn cartoons, letters, and printed material and clippings expressing her pro-life views. Included is her anti-abortion poem, "Retribution"; her "Modern Fable," an allegorical short story reflecting Danforth's negative view of the pro-choice movement; and her paper, "A Brief Account of the Pro-Life Movement." This account consists of a short essay on the beginnings of the national pro-life movement and the precepts on which the movement is based, an account of the origins of a pro-life organization in Maine, a list of Maine Right-To-Life area contacts, chapter presidents, and their addresses, and a list of pro-life organizations and their addresses across the United States. In addition, there are copies of letters to members of congress and government officials regarding abortion legislation and the Equal Rights Amendment.

BIOGRAPHY

Mildred Emeline Danforth was born in Lebanon, Maine, in about 1900. She attended the University of New Hampshire and the University of North Carolina, and earned a certificate in library science from the City Library in Springfield, Massachusetts. She worked as a librarian and teacher, and during World War II was in the Women's Army Corps. Danforth is the author of A Quaker Pioneer: Laura Haviland, Superintendent of the Underground (1961) and of two plays, "The Spirit of Cedarhurst," and "Reluctant Traveler."
