1 folderThe collection contains letters and postcards from Alice Hamilton to Effie B. Collins from 1922 to 1935. Hamilton discusses visits with Collins, as well as her family, particularly her mother and her sister Norah, and their work at Hull House. Some postcards feature images of Hull House and Mackinac Island etched by Norah Hamilton. The collection also contains a short memoir of an ocean voyage to Europe written by Effie B. Collins in the 1920s, as well as clippings about the Collins sisters and Alice Hamilton's career. In addition, there is a photograph of Alice Hamilton from the 1960s as well as a photograph of the Hamiton home in Hadlyme, Connecticut.
BIOGRAPHY
Effie B. Collins was born May 3, 1877, in Lynn, Massachusetts, to Elizabeth E. Brimmer and Elihu P. Collins. She had a sister, Alice E. Collins (1881-1956). Effie and Alice lived in Lawrence, Massachusetts; Effie graduated Lawrence High School in 1895. Later the sisters lived in Rye, New Hampshire; they also spent winters in Tuscon, Arizona. Effie B. Collins died March 24, 1977 in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
A physician who was the first woman professor at Harvard University, Alice Hamilton (1869-1970) also worked as a resident researcher at Hull House, a researcher of industrial poisons for the United States Department of Labor, and a member of the League of Nations Health Organization and of President Hoover's Committee on Social Trends.
