1.42 linear feet (2 folio boxes)Collection contains two commonplace books. One book may have been kept by Grace Hobart of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. It contains copied poems and drafts of a novel. A copied sermon near the end of the volume is dated January 1849. The other book has the inscription "Ethel Hobart from Papa" on the front flyleaf, and may have been owned by Ethel Hobart Rowse. This book also contains drafts of novellas and stories (1891-1896). The book also includes pages torn from a notebook and drafts of stories on loose sheets.
BIOGRAPHY
Grace A. Hobart, whose father was Henry Hobart, lived in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, in the mid-nineteenth century. Ethel Hobart Rowse was born in 1881 and lived in Plymouth, Massachusetts. She was a friend of penologist and reformer Miriam Van Waters, who served as superintendent of the Reformatory for Women in Framingham, Massachusetts (1932-1957). Rowse married Herbert Winship Rowse. She died in 1967.
