BIOGRAPHY

Photographer Alice Austen (March 17, 1866-June 9, 1952) grew up on Staten Island, where she lived with her grandparents, aunts and uncles, and her mother, Alice Cornell Austen. She was introduced to photography at the age of ten, and over the course of her life took nearly 9,000 photographs, of which some 3,500 still exist. Her photographs captured the leisure life of the middle class, the Quarantine Station on Staten Island serving newly arrived immigrants, and people and street scenes of Manhattan.
