4 foldersThe scrapbook of Maria Theresa Baldwin Hollander contains letters to Hollander from colleagues in the woman suffrage movement and from relatives and friends that were originally assembled in an album. The letters from Lucy Stone, Mary Ashton Rice Livermore, and others are from 1884 and concern Hollander's arrangements for a lecture series. Letters from relatives (1835-1866) are from Hollander's aunts, brothers, son, and cousin. They mainly concern family matters, but also address such issues as slavery and religion.
BIOGRAPHY
Maria Theresa Baldwin Hollander, daughter of Charles North and Maria Smith Baldwin, was born February 7, 1820, in New York. She was the proprietor of L.P. Hollander & Company, which specialized in children's and women's clothing. Founded in Boston, Massachusetts, the store expanded to have branches in multiple cities, including New York City, Newport, Rhode Island, and Palm Beach, Florida. In addition to being a successful businesswoman, Hollander was an advocate of suffrage for women. She was married to Jacob Louis Hollander (1810-1894); they had four children. Hollander died July 30, 1885, in Somerville, Massachusetts.
