1 folderThe collection consists of a volume entitled My Motor Log Book which includes details of Rosamond Thaxter's travels, mainly throughout New England. A trip in March and April 1927 to Washington DC; Charleston, South Carolina; and other states is also recorded. Thaxter records distances traveled, time spent in travel, weather, road conditions, travel companions, stops made and visits paid, and other details of automobile trips. The purchase of a new car on April 11, 1931 is also noted.
BIOGRAPHY
Philanthropist Rosamond Thaxter was born on April 14, 1895 in Kittery Point, Maine, the only child of John and Mary Stoddard Thaxter. She grew up in Kittery Point and spent most of her adult life there. She traveled widely, visiting Italy, France, Spain, and Japan, as well as other countries. She devoted much of her life to volunteering for organizations including the Girl Scouts and for causes such as environmentalism. She was also a founder of Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In 1962, she published a biography of her paternal grandmother, poet Celia Thaxter, entitled Sandpiper: The Life and Letters of Celia Thaxter. She also wrote a short memoir: "Aunt Rozzie Remembers." She died on January 9, 1989 in Kittery Point.
