BIOGRAPHY
In April of 1853 Harriet Newell Felton Parker and her family embarked on a year-long trip through Europe. She was accompanied by her husband George A. Parker, her daughter Edith, and her sister Lydia Brewster Felton. Parker's brother, Cornelius Conway ("CC") Felton, a Harvard graduate, Professor of Greek Literature, and Harvard University's President from 1860 to 1862, also accompanied her on the trip. The family left Boston on the Daniel Webster, a clipper ship, and arrived in Liverpool, England several weeks later. From there they traveled via railroad to London where they met with author Charles Dickens and many others.
For the rest of the year, the family traveled extensively, including France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. To expand his field of study CC Felton, accompanied by George Parker, also traveled to Athens while the rest of family remained in Florence, Italy. After the family was reunited, they left for Rome in February of 1854. They spent March and April in Paris and London, which Parker described in great detail, including visits to the Louvre, Westminster Abbey, and other tourist attractions. In addition to Parker's diary, Cornelius Felton published an account of their travels in Familiar Letters from Europe, (Ticknor and Fields, Boston, 1864)

The diary of Harriet Newell Felton Parker was given to the Schlesinger Library in 1979 by her grandchildren: Haven Parker, Harriet Felton Parker, Kathryn V. Parker, Cornelia Conway Parker, Chester Parker, and Mary C. Parker.
