1 folderThe collection consists of a diary describing in detail Lily Larkin's ocean voyage and her travels through England Scotland, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and France in 1868. (The diary begins with a passage apparently written by a Mr. John C. Gray, a fellow passenger who Larkin notes is "extremely agreeable and kind.") Larkin describes expeditions to the Grand National Rose-Show at the Crystal Palace at Sydenham, Westminster Abbey, and the British Museum; trips to different parts of England; sightseeing and shopping in Belgium; and hikes in Switzerland. She notes, "Brussels seems to be a great place for lingerie of all kinds" and comments on the reasonable price of lace there. Later entries describe an 1876 trip to England, France, Italy, and Switzerland with Walter and Hattie, who may be her husband and daughter. This trip was undertaken with hopes that a summer in Europe would improve Hattie's health and many entries note her condition.

Lily Larkin was a young woman in Boston, Massachusetts, who traveled to Europe in 1868 and again in 1876.
