Diary includes extensive entries concerning Beach's social life, teaching, poems and her relationships with her aunt and uncle. She writes about her 20th birthday, the prospect of marriage, the death of her uncle, her depression following the birth and death of her child, and the early days of her marriage. Beach also wrote about her fears of becoming "a baby manufacturer and stocking darner," as well as her opinions regarding the happiness of married couples. Beach's last entry describes the letter she received with news of Arthur Jordan's death after the Battle of Cedar Mountain during the Civil War.

BIOGRAPHY

Phebe F. Beach was born on July 31, 1837. She was adopted by her aunt and uncle, Phebe Perkins Beech (the spelling of the family name varied) and Joseph Palmer Fessenden. Joseph Fessenden was a Congregationalist clergyman in Kennebunkport (1820-1829) and South Bridgton, Maine (1829-1861). In 1858, Phebe F. Beach taught school in New Gloucester, Maine. In August 1860, she married Arthur Jordan; a child was born in January 1862, and died two months later. Arthur Jordan enlisted with the 10th Maine Infantry in April 1862, and was killed at Cedar Mountain, Virginia, in August 1862.
