1 folderCollection consists of a cookbook (handwritten in several hands) created by Helen Courthope Forman Lake. Recipes include many different kinds of cake, puddings, savory dishes, and dandelion wine. This collection also includes a handwritten index, and an undated letter written by Lake, sharing her family's Christmas pudding recipe.
BIOGRAPHY
Helen Courthope Forman Lake was born in January 1874, to Sydney Mills Forman and Freda Gardiner Forman in Cambourne, England. In November of 1903, Helen Courthope Forman Lake married Kirsopp Lake; they had two children, Gerard Anthony Christian Kirsopp Lake (1904-1972) and Agnes Freda Isabel Kirsopp Lake (1909-1993). The Lakes lived in the Netherlands from 1909 to 1913, while Kirsopp Lake taught early Christian literature at Leiden University. In 1913, the Lakes moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Kirsopp Lake was offered a temporary teaching position at the Episcopal Theological School. In 1914, he was offered a position at the Harvard Divinity School. In 1932, Kirsopp Lake divorced Helen Courthope Forman Lake, in order to marry his former student, Silva Tipple New. After the divorce, Kirsopp Lake resigned from his position as Winn Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the Divinity School, and became a professor of history at Harvard College.
Helen Courthope Forman Lake died on October 22, 1958 in Warren, Connecticut.
