Collection consists of a handwritten cookbook that Marthe Gély created for her daughter-in-law in or about 1917. The cookbook also contains two letters from Marthe Gély, printed material, bills, and miscellaneous notes.

BIOGRAPHY

Marthe Gély was the mother of Ferdinand Gély a journalist and member of the French Chamber of Deputies. His wife, Janet O'Bryan, was the daughter of Sarah Ann McCulloch and John Duross O'Bryan, Pennsylvania natives who retired to Paris, France in 1898. Both Janet and her sister Sara studied the arts in France. Sara O'Bryan married the painter Frederick Frieseke in 1905. Janet, an aspiring singer, met Gély while studying voice in Paris and the couple married in 1907.

This cookbook of Marthe Gély was given to the Schlesinger Library by Nicholas Kilmer, the grand nephew of Janet O'Bryan, in 2016.
