1 folderCollection consists of an account book detailing Amelia Hegins Donnel's expenditures for various household items and food over the course of several years. Donnel recorded her spending using categories such as meat; poultry and game; molasses and liquor; fish and salt; eggs and butter; flour and biscuit; wood and coal; oil, candles, and soap; vegetables and fruit; sugar and tea; dry goods and sundries; and the ice house. Donnel kept track of the price and quantity of her purchases, as well as who she was purchasing from. Donnel also recorded the names of wages of her domestic help, as well as of what had been hung in the smokehouse. The account book also records Donnel's sources of income.
BIOGRAPHY
Amelia Hegins Donnel was born ca.1809 to Amelia Drum Hegins and Charles Hegins in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. In 1825, Amelia Hegins Donnel's sister, Elizabeth Hegins, married Charles Gobin Donnel. Charles and Elizabeth Donnel had three children: Henry (born 1826), Amelia (born 1829), and Alice (born 1832). Elizabeth Hegins Donnel died in 1833. Amelia Hegins Donnel married Charles Gobin Donnel in 1835. Charles and Amelia Donnel had four children: Elizabeth (born 1837), Mary (born 1838), Margaret (born 1841), and Frances (born 1844).
Charles Gobin Donnel was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to Margaret Gobin Donnel and Henry Donnel on March 14, 1801. He served as a judge in the eighth judicial district of Pennsylvania, and died on March 16, 1844. Amelia Hegins Donnel died on October 6, 1893.
