The collection consists of two volumes, one a commonplace book which is mostly comprised of poetry, some of which is likely original and some copied from other sources. Examples of poem titles include "Youth," "Life," "Love," "A Wedding," "On the Death of a Child," etc. The volume also includes a short story entitled "Elinor Hamilton." Appleton likely completed the volume while at school. The second volume is a recipe book. The bulk of the recipes are for cakes and breads, but recipes for puddings, soups, sauces, and meats are also included. An index to the recipes is included in the front of the volume.

BIOGRAPHY

Mary Ann Louisa Smith Appleton was born in Boston in 1819 to William and Caroline Smith. She married bank president William Channing Appleton in 1880 and the couple resided on Walnut Street in Roxbury, Massachusetts. She died in 1906 and is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The papers of Mary Ann Louisa Smith Appleton were given to the Schlesinger Library by her great-grandniece, Barbara Murdoch Phillips '38, in 1996.
