19 linear feet (19 cartons)Collection consists of personal and professional correspondence, biographical information, datebooks, a journal, photographs, clippings, etc. Also memos, correspondence, clippings, speeches and testimony from her years at the Council of Economic Advisers; and speeches, reports, photographs, etc., from her work at General Motors.
BIOGRAPHY
Economist and professor, Marina von Neumann Whitman (b. 1935) grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, the only child of Marietta and John von Neumann, world-renowned mathematician, inventor of game theory, and computer pioneer. Educated at Radcliffe College (BA 1956) and Columbia University (PhD 1962). Whitman was the first woman appointed to the president's Council of Economic Advisers in 1972. She also served as vice-president and chief economist of General Motors (1979-1985) and as group vice-president of public affairs (1985-1992). She is a professor of business administration and public policy at the University of Michigan's Rose School of Business and the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. Married to Robert Whitman, a professor of English, she has two children.
