Collection consists largely of speeches and lectures given by Shalala, 1973-2017; op-eds and letters; personal and professional photographs, articles about her, school records, etc. Does not include any official records of Shalala's work as Secretary of Health and Human Services, nor as President of Hunter College, University of Miami, and as Chancellor of University of Wisconsin-Madison.

BIOGRAPHY

Political scientist, university administrator, and Secretary of Health and Human Services, Donna Edna Shalala was born in 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Edna Smith and James Abraham Shalala. She graduated from Western College for Women in 1962 and earned a PhD from Syracuse University in 1970. Shalala served on the faculties of Baruch College (City University of New York) and Teachers College (Columbia University) before being appointed president of Hunter College (1980-1988). She later served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1988-1993) before being appointed by President Bill Clinton to head the Department of Health and Human Services (1993-2001). From 2001 to 2015 Shalala was president of the University of Miami. She served as President of the Clinton Foundation from 2015 to 2017. She was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush in 2008, and in 2010 she received the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights. In 2018 she was elected to Congress from Florida's 27th Congressional district.

  2. Series II. Opeds, writings, correspondence, clippings, 1941-2017 (Cartons 8-13)
