.21 linear feet (1/2 file box)The bulk of these papers consists of letters and telegrams pertaining to the suffrage movement and the Republican Party in Idaho; some letters in folder #7 deal with the founding of the League of Women Voters. Other papers include speeches by Margaret Stevenson Roberts, printed material about suffrage in Idaho and Roberts's library work, and clippings. There are no papers concerning Roberts's personal life. Arrangement is chronological within each folder.
BIOGRAPHY
Margaret Stevenson Roberts, suffragist and librarian, was the daughter of George H. Roberts, the first attorney general of Idaho. In 1905, she was appointed librarian for the Idaho Traveling Library and was responsible for distributing books to every corner of the state. She retired in 1933, but returned to work in 1947, holding the post until her death on May 24, 1952.
Roberts was also active in the woman suffrage movement and the state Republican Party. In 1916 and for several terms thereafter she served as the Republican National Committeewoman for Idaho. She served as vice president of the National Council of Women Voters, and as chairman of Idaho for the National League of Women Voters, resigning from that post in 1920. She was active in promoting social legislation and in club work, serving as president of the Boise Columbian Club.

The Margaret Stevenson Roberts papers were given to the Schlesinger Library in March 1956 by Susan Dabney Taylor. The collection was prepared for microfilming by Janet Hayashi in July 1989.
