At the 1972 regular meeting of the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians, Lois Banner and Mary Hartman suggested that, in view of the increased interest in women's history, the organization sponsor a conference in that field. The group agreed and the two historians organized the first Berkshire Conference on the History of Women, which was held at Rutgers University in 1973. The papers of this conference were not collected at the Schlesinger Library; some were published in Clio's Consciousness Raised: New Perspectives on the History of Women, edited by Mary S. Hartman and Lois Banner (New York, Harper & Row, 1974).

Series I, Second Conference, Radcliffe College, Cambridge, Massachusetts, October, 1974, consists of papers given at the second conference, held at Radcliffe College. All the speakers were invited to submit copies of their papers and most of them did so. Some of the papers were deposited with restrictions on access, photocopying or publication; any such restrictions are noted in the inventory. Papers are arranged alphabetically by author.
