1.04 linear feet ((2+1/2 file boxes) plus 1 folio folder+, 1 supersize photograph folder)The papers consist in large part of Jessie Hodder's correspondence with her son, Alan, and with Elizabeth Glendower Evans. Much of the professional correspondence concerns prisons and prison reform; some pertains to professional conferences and to Hodder's health. There are also papers of Elizabeth Glendower Evans that were found with Hodder's papers. These consist mainly of correspondence, a diary, and letters, etc. for her 70th birthday. The correspondence refers to Evans' sentiments against war (specifically World War I) and conscription, and to the Sacco-Vanzetti case.
BIOGRAPHY
Jessie Donaldson Hodder, penologist, was a matron at the State Industrial School for Girls at Lancaster, Massachusetts (1906-1908), an associate of Dr. Richard Cabot in social service work in Boston (1908-1910), and Superintendent of the Massachusetts Prison and Reformatory for Women at Sherborn (1911-1931). These papers of Jessie Donaldson Hodder were given to the Schlesinger Library in April 1957 by her son, Alan Hodder. Folder #23 was transferred from the records of Schlesinger Library Director Pat King in September 1995.
