Harold B. Haley (1923-2017) was born on September 11, 1923 in Madison, Wisconsin. Harold attended the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the St. Louis University Medical School, Missouri while serving under conscription as a Captain in the United States Airforce during World War II. After military service, he trained as a surgeon at the Harvard-affiliated Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now Brigham and Women's Hospital). Howard is known as a teacher, he held positions at Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois, the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo (now University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences), the University of Virginia, Charlottesville (UVA), and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. While at UVA he launched a clinical residency program in Roanoke-area hospitals for UVA students.
He served as Associate Medical Director of the Carillion Clinic Hospice and Honorary Professor at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, Roanoke, Virginia. Haley was awarded the Damon Runyon Fellowship in 1951. He is co-author of Medical Anthropology (World Anthropology) (2011) and editor of Living under the Sword: Psychosocial Aspects of Recurrent and Progressive Life-Threatening Illness (2003). Haley married Margaret Carroll Haley in 1945.
Biographical Note
Francis D. Moore (1913-2001) was the Surgeon-in-Chief at Brigham and Women's Hospital from 1948 to 1976. Moore developed numerous experimental surgical treatements including burn treatment techniques and organ transplants.
