Biographical / Historical

Mildred B. Codding (1902-1991), graduated from Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts, 1924; M.S., Columbia University, New York City, New York, 1926, was an American medical illustrator. Codding was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, in 1902. After graduation from Columbia University with a master’s degree in Zoology and Genetics, Codding entered a two-year program in medical illustration at Johns Hopkins, studying with a German illustrator, Max Brödel. After completing her first year, Codding moved to Boston to work with neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. After Cushing retired in 1932, Codding remained at the Brigham until 1968. She died in 1991.
