Philip Leder laboratory notebooks

Scope and Contents

Consists of disbound notebooks recording Philip Leder's genetic research from December 1963 to August 1965. During the year 1964, Leder worked with Marshall Nirenberg on the Nirenberg and Leder experiment, which involved filtering mRNA samples through a device developed by Leder to elucide the triplet-nucleotide sequences that code amino acids.

Biographical / Historical

Philip Leder (1934-2020), A.B., 1956, Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts; M.D., 1960, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, was an American geneticist.

Philip Leder was born in Washington, D.C. and studied at Western High School, Washington, D.C., then Harvard College (A.B., 1956) and Harvard Medical School (M.D., 1960). Leder is known for his early work with Marshall Nirenberg while working in Nirenberg's laboratory at the National Heart Institute, Section of Biochemical Genetics. The "Leder and Nirenberg experiment" involved filtering mRNA samples to elucide the triplet-nucleotide sequences that code amino acids. Following that landmark experiment, Leder made many contributions in the fields of molecular genetics, immunology, and the genetic basis of cancer. He is a recipient of the Lasker Award and the National Medal of Science. Leder was Chairman of the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School.

Leder married Aya Brudner. They had three children: Micki, Ethan (Tani), and Benjamin. Leder died on February 2, 2020 from complications of Parkinson's disease.
