John Mills Browne papers

Scope and Contents

Collection consists of John Mills Browne's student notebooks from his time at Massachusetts Medical College of Harvard University (later Harvard Medical School). In these notebooks, Browne records lectures by Walter Channing, John Ware, and Jacob Bigelow. Collection also includes Browne's pharmaceutical and household remedies recipe books, 1848 to 1852.

Biographical / Historical

John Mills Browne (1831-1894), M.D., 1852, Massachusetts Medical College of Harvard University (now Harvard Medical School, Boston), was appointed Surgeon General of the United States Navy by President Grover Cleveland in 1888, a position he held until 1893.
