Cotzias, 1960-1979 (inclusive), consists of Cotzias’ manuscripts, articles, and reprints about chronic manganese poisoning and the treatment of Parkinson’s disease with the drug L-Dopa. Collection contains Cotzias’ reprints as published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, and Nature. Records include a small amount of Cotzias’ correspondence with colleagues about research funding, letters of congratulations to Cotzias about awards he received, and Cotzias’ correspondence with Katherine Rodgers Denckla ,who funded Cotzias’ research, as well as some of Denckla’s own personal and professional correspondence. Collection also contains newspaper clippings and articles about Cotzias’ research. Many records are photocopies of originals.

Biographical Notes
George C. Cotzias (1918-1977), M.D., 1943, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, was Professor of Neurology at Cornell University Medical School (now Weill Medical College), Attending Physician at New York Hospital (now New York-Presbyterian Hospital), and Attending Physician and Special Assistant to the Director at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, all located in New York, New York, until his death in 1977. Cotzias developed the drug L-dopa as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease and chronic manganese poisoning. Cotzias’ research began at Brookhaven National Laboratory (1953-1974) where he was Senior Scientist and Head of the Physiology Division. Cotzias’ research was funded by Katherine Rodgers Denckla.
Katherine Norwood Rodgers Denckla (dates unknown), was born to Dora White (Browning) Donner of Villanova, Pennsylvania, and J. Norwood Rodgers. Denckla was married to C. Paul Denckla, obtaining a divorce in 1936. She provided financial support for George C. Cotzias's research, and is credited in numerous research publications of George C. Cotzias.
