Overview

Henry Ware, Jr. (1794-1843), Unitarian theologian, was Professor of Pulpit Eloquence and Pastoral Care at the Harvard Divinity School from 1830 to 1842. His papers include personal correspondence and letters to Unitarian minister Frederic Huidekoper; manuscripts of sermons; and manuscript notes made by students under Ware's supervision in compiling a book, "The Religious Life Delineated."

Biographical note on Henry Ware, Jr.

Henry Ware, Jr. (1794-1843), Unitarian theologian, was Professor of Pulpit Eloquence and Pastoral Care at the Harvard Divinity School from 1830 to 1842. His father, Henry Ware, Sr. (1764-1845), was a Unitarian minister and theologian and the Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard University from 1805 until 1837. Ware, Jr. received his Harvard AB in 1812 and his Doctor of Divinity in 1834. After graduation, he became an assistant teacher at Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Ware was ordained and became minister of Boston's Second Church in 1817, a position he maintained until he was appointed to the newly created position of Professor of Pulpit Eloquence and the Pastoral Care at Harvard in 1830. Upon his departure from Boston’s Second Church, Ralph Waldo Emerson succeeded him as minister. Ware taught at Harvard until 1842. He died in 1843.
