Biographical note on Charles Swain Thomas
Charles Swain Thomas (1868-1943), educator, taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Education from 1920 to 1936. He received his AB in 1894 and his AM in 1895 from Indiana University, as well as an additional AB degree from Harvard University in 1897, and a Litt.D. degree from Rhode Island College of Education in 1933. Thomas began his career as a public school teacher, then taught English at Indiana University from 1894 to 1897, and Centre College, from 1897 to 1901. He served as head of the English department at Shortridge High School from 1901 to 1908, then at Newton High School from 1908 to 1918. In 1920, he joined the faculty of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, a position he maintained until 1936. From 1920 to 1925, Thomas worked on the editorial staff of the Atlantic Monthly, and edited many books throughout his career. He died in 1943.
