Papers of Juan Marichal

Overview

Juan Marichal (1922-2010), Spanish historian and literary critic, was Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University from 1949 until his retirement in 1988. His papers document Marichal’s teaching career at Harvard, his scholarly publications, as well as his professional presentations at various academic conferences and meetings. It also contains papers relating to Marichal’s wife, Spanish poetry scholar Solita Salinas Marichal.

The Papers of Juan Marichal document his career as a historian and professor at Harvard University. It contains correspondence, memoranda, publications, articles, reports, manuscripts, a scrapbook, newspaper clippings, notes, drafts, photographs, microfilm, slides, audio recordings, and a videotape relating to Marichal's interests. Topics and concerns include Spanish thought and literature; the history of Spain; the intellectual history of Latin America; studies relating to Jorge Guillen and the Civil War in Spain; assistance to refugees from the Spanish Civil War; Marichal's lectures; letters of recommendation; scholarship and teaching; invitations to meetings and conferences; and materials relating to Manuel Azaña's works. The collection also contains papers relating to Marichal’s wife, Spanish poetry scholar Solita Salinas Marichal and Ramon Lavandero.

Biographical note on Juan Marichal

Juan Augusto Marichal (1922-2010), Spanish historian and literary critic, was Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University from 1949 until his retirement in 1988. He was born in the Canary Islands in 1922, but due to the Spanish Civil War, was forced into exile in France in 1939. Marichal began his studies in Paris, but the beginning of World War II and the threat of German invasion once again forced him into exile. Marichal moved to Casablanca, where he studied at a French high school. In 1941, he traveled to Mexico on a ship leased by an organization that provided aid to Spanish Civil War exiles. He spent the next four years at the Universidad Autonoma in Mexico City, obtaining a Licenciatura from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters in 1945. During this time, from 1944 to 1945, Marichal was also an instructor in history at the Institute Luis Vives in Mexico. He then relocated to the United States, receiving his AM in 1948 and PhD in 1949 from Princeton University.

In 1949, he was hired at Harvard University as an Assistant Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures. Marichal left Harvard from 1953 to 1958, serving as an Associate Professor of Spanish at Bryn Mawr College. Marichal then returned to Harvard in 1958 to be an Associate Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures. From 1961 to 1979, he was the Smith Professor of the French and Spanish Languages and Literatures, and in 1979, he became chairman of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. Marichal's Harvard courses related to Spanish thought and literature, the history of Spain, the literature of the Spanish Civil War, and the intellectual history of Latin America. He retired in 1988.

Throughout his career, Marichal was involved with several professional organizations, including as a fellow of the Organization of American States, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, director of the Fellowships Committee for Latin America of the Guggenheim Foundation from 1968 to 1980, and a corresponding member of the Hispanic Society of America. He also published numerous works, including books on Spanish politician Manuel Azaña. Marichal died in 2010.
