Biographical note on Hans C. G. von Jagemann

Hans Carl Günther von Jagemann (1859-1926), Professor of German Philology at Harvard University, taught at Harvard from 1889 to 1925.

Born in Grottkau, Germany (now Grodków, Poland), von Jagemann studied at Naumberg, Leipzig, and Tubingen, before coming to the United States and Johns Hopkins University in 1881. After receiving his doctorate from Johns Hopkins in 1884, von Jagemann was Professor of Modern Languages at Earlham College from 1884 to 1886. Von Jagemann then became Professor of Germanic Languages at Indiana University, teaching there from 1886 to 1889.

In 1889, Von Jagemann came to Harvard as Assistant Professor of German. Von Jagemann was later appointed Professor Germanic Philology and taught for 36 years at Harvard, becoming emeritus in 1925. During his career, von Jagemann authored several textbooks on the study of German language and frequently published journal articles on Germanic and Romance lanaguage. Professionally, von Jagemann served as president of the Modern Language Association in 1899. He also was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
