Overview
This collection contains drafts of five miscellaneous votes by the Harvard Faculty between 1742 and 1803 related to student behavior, both in specific cases and in the development of College rules. The Harvard Faculty, initially known as the Immediate Government, began holding meetings in 1725 to discuss educational and administrative concerns of the College. The group primarily consisted of the president of Harvard College, the professors, and the tutors. The documents in this collection consist of drafts of votes related to the settling of dormitory chambers after Commencement in 1742, a financial complaint made by student Asa Packard (Harvard AB 1783) in 1780, a ban on hats in Chapel in 1801, a rule related to student delinquents in 1801, and the suspension of student George Brimmer (Harvard AB 1803) for neglect of his studies in 1803.

Historical Note
The Harvard Faculty, initially known as the Immediate Government, began holding meetings in 1725 to discuss educational and administrative concerns of the College. The group consisted of the president of Harvard College, the professors and tutors, and occasionally the librarian, the steward, and other invited parties with an interest in the subjects of discussion.
The earliest meetings, from 1725 into the early nineteenth century, were often focused on student disciplinary concerns and routine administrative matters, including the maintenance of College buildings, the purchase of supplies, leaves of absence, policy decisions, rooming assignments, and other rules, regulations, and pressing matters. In 1890, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University was founded, and the meetings from 1890 to the present day record the discussions and decisions of that body.

The material was first classified and described in the Harvard University Archives shelflist prior to 1980. The material was re-processed in 2010. Re-processing involved a collection survey, re-housing in appropriate archival folders and boxes, and the creation of this finding aid.
