The Harvard University News Office was established in 1919. The first photographer was hired in 1943. Chiefly 8x10 black-and-white photographic prints of faculty, staff, students, buildings, alumni, visitors and activities.

Photographs are portraits of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and visitors to the University, as well as photographs of University buildings, events, and activities, including sports competitions and commencement. Materials consist primarily of black and white enlargements, in some cases accompanied by contact sheets or negatives. A few of the images are color slides.
Even if enlargements are not specifically noted in the list of photographs, it is probable that there are enlargements in the folder.
Historical note
The Harvard University News Office was established in 1919. The first photographer was hired in 1943. During the early 1970s, the News Office was placed administratively under the Office of the Vice President for Government, Community and Public Affairs. In 1994-1995, the name of the office was changed to Harvard University Office of News and Public Affairs and later was renamed Public Affairs and Communications.
