Biographical note on Herschel Baker
Herschel Clay Baker (1914-1990), Francis Lee Higginson Professor of English Literature, taught at Harvard from 1946 to 1984. Baker completed his undergraduate studies at Southern Methodist University before coming to Harvard for graduate work, receiving his Ph.D. in 1939. Baker taught at the University of Texas for seven years before joining the Harvard faculty in 1946. While at Harvard, Baker served several terms as chair of the Department of English. Baker's research focused on the intellectual history of Christian humanism and its erosion.
