Scope and content

This collection includes letters of recommendation and student records, research files related to Pilbeam's fieldwork in Chad, Pakistan, and Cameroon, grant records, professional activity files, and manuscripts, including related correspondence and illustrations. Teaching materials include lecture notes, syllabi, examinations, handouts, laboratory work, and student grades for Pilbeam's anthropology courses at Harvard and Yale Universities. Other records include royalty statements and correspondence with publishers, slides related to Pilbeam's research or teaching, and biographical material, including photographs, news clippings, and personal correspondence. Harvard University records in the collection chronicle Pilbeam's role in the redesigning of the undergraduate curriculum, his efforts to increase financial aid to students, and improvements to Harvard housing.

Biographical note on David R. Pilbeam

English anthropologist David Roger Pilbeam (born 1940) is the Henry Ford II Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard University (since 1990) and curator of paleoanthropology at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Pilbeam received his BA (1962) and MA (1966) from Cambridge University; and his PhD from Yale University (1967). Before arriving at Harvard in 1981, Pilbeam taught anthropology at Yale University. Pilbeam has served in several Harvard administrative positions, including dean of undergraduate education (1987-1992, 1996-1997), and interim dean of Harvard College (2007-2008). Pilbeam also directs the Paleoanthropology Laboratory at Harvard University, which focuses on the evolution of hominoids, including hominins, as well as other mammals. Pilbeam's research has primarily focused on interpreting the role of Miocene-period apes in the development of humans.
