The Deborah Pan class notes and essays contain a selection of Pan's notebooks and essays from her time as a Harvard undergraduate, dating from about 1990 to 1992. The notebooks include dated lecture notes and document classes in Physics, Math, Anthropology, Ancient Chinese Art and Religion, and Chinese History. Pan's notes are very legible and visually appealing, with different colors of ink, careful sketches, and diagrams. The notebooks almost exclusively focus on academic work with very little reference to Pan's personal life. Grades, a note from a friend, and marginalia in Chinese can be found towards the end of some notebooks. The Spring 1992 notebook offers a brief glimpse into Pan's life outside of class via two daily activity schedules, a term budget featuring income made through the Boston Refugee Youth Enrichment Tutoring program, and notes on graduate programs.

Pan was a successful student, receiving high marks on her written work. Her essays for Ancient Chinese Art and Religion analyze Chinese religious art objects such as vases and bronzes. Her essays for Historical Studies B02 analyze the relationship between ancient Chinese material culture and society. All essays are graded and include professor feedback.
