Overview

Bruce Campbell Hopper (1892-1973) was an associate professor of government at Harvard University from 1930 to 1961. In addition to his academic career, Hopper had a long association with the United States Air Force, serving as a combat pilot in World War I, in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, chief historian for the 8th Air Force and United States Strategic Forces, a consultant for the Pentagon, and a speechwriter to General Carl A. Spaatz. Biographical note on Bruce Campbell Hopper

Bruce Campbell Hopper (1892-1973) was an associate professor of government at Harvard University from 1930 to 1961. Hopper wrote and lectured extensively on the Soviet Union. In addition to his academic career, Hopper had a long association with the United States Air Force. During World War I, he flew 29 combat missions with the 96th Air Squadron in Europe, earning the Croix de Guerre and the Pershing Citation for World War I service. In World War II, Hopper served as an attaché to the United States legation in Stockholm, Sweden representing the Office of Strategic Services (later the Central Intelligence Agency). He observed and interpreted Soviet activities in the Baltic. Hopper also served as the chief historian for the 8th Air Force and United States Strategic Air Forces. After World War II, Hopper served in the Pentagon as a special consultant and speechwriter to General Carl A. Spaatz, commander of Strategic Air Forces in Europe and Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force. Hopper received the Silver Star and Air Force Exceptional Service medal for his work during and after World War II.
