Malcolm W. Greenough Harvard football scrapbook

Malcolm Whelen Greenough (AB '25, MBA '27) was born on January 22, 1904, the son of Malcolm Scollay Greenough, Jr. (AB 1898, LL. B 1902 ) and Violett (Whelen) Greenough. Greenough began his studies at Harvard in 1921, and by 1924, he was Captain of the Harvard Football team at age nineteen -- the youngest man ever to receive the honor. He was also president of his class in 1924, and active in class activities and Harvard clubs. He served on the Student Council, the Senior Endowment Committee, the Athletic Committee, and was selected to serve as chairman of the Class Day Committee. Greenough's club memberships included the Hasty Pudding Club, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Institute of 1770, S.K. Club, Signet Society, Porcellian Club, Stylus Club, Harvard Memorial Society, and the Varsity Club. After graduating from Harvard, he married Kathleen Lawrence Rotch of Boston in June 1925. Greenough attended Harvard Business School and earned an MBA in 1927. He and his wife had two sons, Malcolm Whelen Greenough, Jr. (AB '48) and Lawrence Rotch Greenough (AB '53). Greenough entered the investment banking firm Hutchins & Parkinson, becoming a partner in 1930, and remaining with the firm for the rest of his life. Greenough joined the Naval Reserve in 1937 and went on active duty in 1940. During World War II, he served first as a lieutenant and later as a commander in charge of the USS Rudderow. He was released from duty in 1945, having earned four ribbons and seven commendations; and he was also awarded the Order of the British Empire. Greenough died on May 1, 1948.

The first football game is rumored to have been played on the Harvard campus between the freshman and sophomore classes in the fall of 1827. This annual game between the two classes was forbidden by the Faculty in 1860, and a football was buried to mark the occasion. The game was revived in 1871, and football became an organized sport at Harvard in December 1872, when the Harvard University Foot-Ball Club (H.U.F.B.C. or H.F.B.C.) was formed to foster interest in the sport within the college. Harvard declined to join an intercollegiate association between Yale, Columbia, Princeton, and Rutgers in the fall of 1873, due to the different rules by which Harvard played; Harvard played its first intercollegiate games against McGill in 1874. The following year, the first game between Harvard and Yale was played in New Haven.
