Hunnewell herbarium watercolors

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of six watercolors by Hunnewell painted from four specimens she collected in the Pyrenees in France. Four paintings have printed specimen labels from the attached. The printed labels originally read “F.W. Hunnewell, 2nd.” The “F.W.” has been crossed out and replaced with “M.P.”

Biographical Note

Mary Peele Hunnewell was born on November 17, 1875, in Wellesley, Massachusetts, to Walter and Jane Appleton Peele Hunnewell. She was the younger sister of amateur botanist Francis Welles Hunnewell. She married Sidney M. Williams in 1908 and lived in Wellesley her entire life. She died in 1920.

The Harvard University Herbaria houses five research libraries that are managed collectively as the Botany Libraries. The Gray Herbarium Library specializes in the identification and classification of New World plants with emphasis on North American plants.
