Extent
17 boxesCollection consists of secretarial records, correspondence, financial records, membership lists, clippings, and publications. The collection contains some of the correspondence of Caroline Soule, an American novelist, poet, religious writer, editor, and ordained Universalist minister.
The scrapbooks in boxes 14, 15, and 17 have been disbound for digitization. The pages have been imaged as they appeared in the intact scrapbook. Any pamphlets or letters were only photographed as they were mounted, without imaging any addiitonal material inside additional pages or envelopes. If an item became unattached, it was imaged in its entirety.
Biographical / Historical
The Association of Universalist Women was founded in 1869 and is believed to be the first organization of lay church women in the United States. The name of the organization has changed several times over the years: The Woman's Centenary Aid Association (1869-1871), Woman's Centenary Association (1871-1905), Women's National Missionary Association (1905-1939), and the Association of Universalist Women (1939-1963) The Association of Universalist Women merged with the Alliance of Unitarian Women to form th Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation in 1963.
