Scope and Contents

Dimensions: 17 3/4 in. x 11 ½ in. The handwritten document, signed by Lady Mowlson, acknowledges that Thomas Weld received a £100 donation from Lady Mowlson to be used for the "maintenance of some poor scholler." The document was originally pasted into the "Wills, gifts and grants" volume, but was removed in 1944 and housed separately.

Biographical / Historical

Lady Ann Mowlson (also spelled Moulson) was born Ann Radcliffe in 1576 in England. In 1600 she married alderman Thomas Mowlson, who served as Lord Mayor of London in 1634. Lady Mowlson inherited half of his estate upon his death in in 1639. In 1643, Lady Mowlson donated £100 to create Harvard's first endowed scholarship. Lady Mowlson died in 1661. Radcliffe College was named in her honor at its chartering in 1894.

Thomas Weld (1590?-1662), one of the first ministers of Roxbury, Mass., was born in England and immigrated to Massachusetts in 1632. He served as an agent for the colony and Harvard College during a fundraising mission to England in the 1640s.
