Lord Carrington travelogue of Villard expedition

The small leather-bound volume contains pages from a published diary/calendar/memo book dated August to December 1883. Lord Carrington, a member of the British delegation invited by Henry Villard to attend the opening ceremonies for the Northern Pacific Railroad, used it as a daily diary or travelogue during his visit to the United States. Carrington sailed from Liverpool to New York on August 17, 1883, arriving on August 28. The party left New York by train on August 30, travelling via Chicago, Ill., St. Paul, Minn., and Bismarck, S.D., before arriving in Montana for the Last Spike ceremony held on September 8, 1883. Carrington and the British party continued by train to Portland, Ore., visited Western cities including Tacoma, Wash., Victoria, B.C., and San Francisco, Ca. They departed San Francisco by train on September 23 and made stops in Salt Lake City, Utah, Omaha, Neb., Chicago, and Niagara Falls, N.Y., returning to New York City on October 6. Lord Carrington remained in New York and was joined there by his wife Cecelia (Lily) on October 16. The couple visited in New York, then travelled to Washington, D.C., November 7 to 12. On November 14, they travelled by train to Boston, Mass., also visiting Syracuse, N.Y., Niagara Falls, Toronto and Montreal, Canada, before returning to New York on December 19. They sailed for Liverpool and arrived on December 31. Throughout the diary, Lord Carrington records his impressions of American cities, cultural monuments and locations visited, people he met, miles traveled by train and boat, and recreational activities engaged in.
