Polaroid Corporation research laboratory notebooks

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Polaroid Corporation research laboratory notebooks created as part of routine research and development activities, circa 1950s-2002. The notebooks contain detailed historical laboratory records created by Polaroid image scientists, organic chemists, polymer chemists, and physicists in the photometric laboratory in the research and development department. The scientists developed and invented Polaroid products, as well as conducted research on a variety of optical, physical, and chemical phenomena. The records form the basis for Polaroid’s patent portfolio that underlies their commercialized inventions as well as novel imaging systems that were never brought to market. The notebooks are hand written and signed by the original investigators and some notebooks include photographs, test strips, graphs, and/or acetate samples. There are a large number of female scientists represented throughout this collection. There are three series in this collection: I. Technical Information Center notebooks; II: Chemical Information Center notebooks; III. Miscellaneous notebooks.
