The Mousam Manufacturing Company was chartered in the state of Maine in 1834, using the river to drive a cotton mill. William Lord purchased the company in 1859 and expanded the number of factories to produce yarn, sashes and blinds, shoes, and leatherboard a synthetic leather derived from cellulose.
