Boston merchant William Brown, born in 1763, operated a store with Josiah Brown and was among the shareholders of the Proprietors of the South Boston Bridge. This collection consists of copies of and original deeds, leases, sketches, memoranda, and corporate records related to the establishment of the Proprietors of the South Boston Bridge, William Brown’s involvement in the company, and plans for construction, dated 1709-1820.

.25 linear feet (1 box)This collection consists of copies of and original deeds, leases, sketches, memoranda, and corporate records related to the establishment of the Proprietors of the South Boston Bridge, William Brown’s involvement in the company, and plans for construction, dated 1709-1820. Included are a number of deeds to land on Orange Street and Washington Street and petition to build a dike, dam, bridge, or causeway in South Boston signed by Brown, William Tudor, Henry Jackson, Josiah Quincy, David Townsend, Robert Pierpont, Jonathan Amory, Jr., Amasa Davis, and other investors.

Boston merchant William Brown, born in 1763, operated a store with Josiah Brown and was among the shareholders of the Proprietors of the South Boston Bridge. Brown also served as a Representative and Senator in the Massachusetts General Court.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The William Brown records related to the South Boston Bridge were received by Baker Library Special Collection as a donation from E. Sohier Welch in 1943.
