George Shove daybook

Scope and Contents

Daybook of George Shove, a potter in Dighton, Massachusetts, recording sales of his wares and general merchandise from 1768 to 1810. There are also a few ledger accounts. Items sold included earthenware, jugs, and chamber pots, as well as shoes, indigo, beaver hats, sheep's wool, farm produce, and wholesale brick. Payment was made in cash and services including blacksmithing, tailoring, and spinning, and hoops, lumber, meat, sugar, molasses, rice, and rum. One of his frequent customers was Adonijah Upton, a glazier in Dighton, of whose will George Shove was executor. Additional names in the volume include Elizabeth Hathaway of Freetown, Daniel Smith of Newport, and Nantucket whaler William Rotch, Sr. (1734-1828). A number of accounts dated 1785-1791 reference the sloop Friendship, which voyaged from Newport to North Carolina carrying Shove's wares; and his shared expenses related to the ship with Lydia Boyes. In 1776, he charged Boyes for sundry vessels of ware for spinners. She may have been a business partner of Shove. There are also entries for timber purchased from Samuel Drinkwater, Hannah Cudworth, and Dorothy Cudworth, and accounts with Upton for their work together cutting timber; and records of men Shove hired to work for him
